How Do You Say ‘Thank You’ In Croatian?

This morning, I went to a new butcher shop in my neighbourhood - Uzanca (Location: Put Požara 2, Makarska).

I was on a mission to buy liver.

Yup, organ meat. Yup, offal.

Or what some refer to as awful. Ha.

Long story short: I entered the butcher shop and ordered the liver. The butcher hands me my package of liver (jetra in Croatian) and tells me the purchase is on him.

I ask: What? Why?

He responds with: This was your first visit. This purchase is on us.

Confused but grateful, I say hvala (thank you).

I will definitely return to my neighbourhood butcher shop.

Not because they didn’t charge me for the liver.

But because they took the time to acknowledge me, a new customer - just as I took the time to acknowledge them, a new business. And yes, that felt good.

And that is how I will say thank you or, as they say in Croatian: ‘hvala!

This is not the first time a local business has provided me with something free of charge. But usually, it’s something like coffee.

This is the first time I was gifted liver. Anywhere.

And that’s one for the books - or, in this case, one for My Adriatic Adventure blog.

It’s the little things…
